Tonight is a STUDYof the Basic Text for Alcoholics Anonymous. We believe every person coming to us seeking help for alcoholism should be given an opportunity to know about the precise, specific, exact Program of Recovery from alcoholism which is contained only in the Big Book. No one among has this thing right. So just for tonight, let's try to practice some humility and refrain from talking about ourselves, our experiences, our ideas or opinions. Let's keep the focus of this meeting trying to understand the wisdom and simple, clear-cut directions for recovery which the First One Hundred set down for us in this, our Basic Text.
We, of Alcoholics Anonymous, are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. To show other alcoholics PRECISELY HOW WE HAVE RECOVERED is the main purpose of this book. For them, we hope these pages will prove so convincing that no further authentication will be necessary. We think this account of our experiences will help everyone to better understand the alcoholic. Many do not comprehend that the alcoholic is a very sick person. And besides, we are sure that our way of living has its advantages for all."
We make certain everyone has a Big Book and begin by referring to the lower right hand corner of the "Dust Jacket" where it reads, "This is the Third Edition of the Big Book, the BASIC TEXT for Alcoholics Anonymous." Or, of course, if they have a Fourth Edition, same message in the middle of the Dust Jacket. We want them to know what ALCOHOLISM is, what the SOLUTION is and HOW to take the ACTION that is necessary to avoid death or insanity by drinking, i.e. to get from the PROBLEM to the SOLUTION.
